The mental health fund for Vancouver firefighters accepts Bitcoin.
The mayor of Vancouver, Mr. Ken Sim, has just launched a fund to support mental health for firefighters. This fund is managed by the Vancouver Firefighter Charities charity, which accepts both cash and digital assets, especially Bitcoin.
According to the Mayor's office, the initiative is based on data from the Canadian Mental Health Association showing that the suicide rate of firefighters is 30% higher than the general population due to job-related psychological trauma. To date, sponsors have committed to support 3.5 Bitcoin, equivalent to about 550,000 CAD.
Previously, the Vancouver Firefighter Charities organization raised 2.7 million CAD at a fundraising event, where Mr. Sim announced plans to establish a fund. Executive Director Eric Himmelman stated that the organization would allocate the funds reasonably to support the mental health of the firefighting force.
This move comes amid the strong volatility in the cryptocurrency market after the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the first time in 2025. Mr. Ken Sim, who has previously expressed a desire to turn Vancouver into a “Bitcoin-friendly city,” continues to advocate for this direction, despite causing controversy in public opinion.
