Harvey Schwartz Takes Helm at Carlyle Group as New Chief Executive
Investment giant Carlyle Group Inc. (CG) has tapped Harvey Schwartz, the former President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., to lead the firm as Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition for the company.
Schwartz will officially assume the CEO position and join Carlyle’s Board of Directors on February 15, 2023. This appointment comes following an extensive search process that began after Kewsong Lee’s exit from the role in August 2022. The move brings fresh leadership from Wall Street to oversee Carlyle’s strategic direction and operations.
With over 25 years of financial services expertise, the 58-year-old executive brings substantial experience to Carlyle. Schwartz’s career at Goldman Sachs, which commenced in 1997, encompassed multiple senior management roles across critical functions, including Chief Financial Officer. His tenure at the firm spanned numerous leadership positions that shaped his understanding of complex financial operations and market dynamics.
Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Schwartz built his financial sector foundation during the 1990s, serving at various institutions including Citicorp from 1990 through 1997. This diverse background across major financial houses has equipped him with broad industry perspective and operational expertise.
In conjunction with this leadership change, Bill Conway will transition from his Interim Chief Executive Officer role while retaining his position as Co-Chairman of the Board. Conway’s continued involvement ensures continuity as Carlyle navigates this executive transition period.
