Game Security Black Hole: Ubisoft's "Rainbow Six" Under Attack, 2 Billion Virtual Coins Illegally Distributed
【Ubisoft】 Recently, the well-known shooter game “Rainbow Six Siege” under Ubisoft experienced a serious hacking incident. On December 27th, the game team publicly confirmed this vulnerability exploitation event on social media — hackers successfully took control of the core parts of the game’s online system and distributed up to 2 billion R6 points (the game’s virtual currency) to each player.
The severity of the incident is beyond imagination. According to player feedback, the compromised system not only caused a large-scale issuance of virtual assets but also allowed hackers to control the game’s messaging system and account banning mechanisms. Imagine this: the official store sells 15,000 R6 points for $99.99, meaning players would need to spend about $13.33 million to normally accumulate 2 billion points. Yet, the hackers sent these assets to everyone in an instant.
This chaos prompted Ubisoft to act quickly. On December 28th, the team issued an emergency notice, announcing the revocation of all R6 points obtained after 11:00 AM UTC, and temporarily suspended the game servers and trading marketplace. Currently, the game is undergoing a small-scale test restart to try to restore normal order.
For online games that rely on virtual economic systems, such incidents are like nightmares — not only destroying economic balance but also severely damaging player trust.
