Samsung Electronics has made a significant strategic move in the automotive technology sector through its subsidiary HARMAN International. The company has completed a definitive agreement to acquire the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) business unit from ZF Group, valued at EUR 1.5 billion, marking a pivotal expansion in its in-vehicle technology capabilities.

Strategic Rationale Behind The Deal

The acquisition represents HARMAN’s continued momentum in transforming the automotive landscape. Since Samsung’s 2017 acquisition of HARMAN, the unit has dramatically expanded its footprint, with revenue growing from $7 billion to over $11 billion in recent periods. The integration of ZF’s ADAS portfolio—encompassing compute solutions, intelligent camera systems, radar technologies, and software platforms—will enable HARMAN to enhance its centralized compute architecture and digital cockpit solutions.

This move positions automotive manufacturers with more flexible and integrated vehicle architectures that prioritize both safety and intelligent functionality. The ADAS capabilities will be seamlessly incorporated into HARMAN’s existing technology roadmap, allowing OEMs to deploy increasingly sophisticated driver assistance features across their vehicle lineups.

Implementation Timeline And Workforce Transition

The transaction is anticipated to close during the second half of 2026. A substantial portion of ZF’s ADAS workforce—approximately 3,750 employees distributed across European, Americas, and Asian operations—will transition to HARMAN upon deal completion. This integration represents a considerable expansion of HARMAN’s technical and engineering capabilities across multiple regions.

Young Sohn, HARMAN’s Chairman and Samsung Senior Advisor, emphasized that the acquisition underscores Samsung’s commitment to shaping the future of mobility through advanced automotive solutions. The deal reinforces HARMAN’s role as a technology leader during the industry’s ongoing digital and autonomous transformation.
