Wu said that Chainalysis released a research report showing that by 2025, the activities of countries in the cryptocurrency space will have increased significantly. Illegal organizations are now operating large-scale on-chain infrastructure to facilitate transnational crime networks in obtaining goods and services and laundering their illicit gains through cryptocurrencies. Data indicates that illegal cryptocurrency transactions reached at least $154 billion in 2025. This is a 162% increase from the previous year, mainly due to a 694% surge in the amounts received by sanctioned entities. However, even if the amounts received by sanctioned entities remain flat compared to the previous year, 2025 will still be a record year for cryptocurrency crime, as activities in most illegal categories have increased. Additionally, stablecoins dominate illegal transactions, accounting for 84% of all illegal transaction volume.
