Walrus is a new kind of digital money and decentralized storage system built on the Sui blockchain that helps people and apps store big files like videos images documents and datasets in a way that does not rely on a single big company controlling all the data and makes sure the files stay safe even if many computers go offline at once Walrus works by breaking large files into smaller pieces and spreading them across many different storage computers called nodes so that the original file can still be rebuilt even if some pieces go missing and this method keeps the cost of storage much lower than traditional systems while giving strong proof that the data really exists on the network and can be used by smart programs on the blockchain because the stored data links directly to objects on Sui and becomes part of the programmable storage layer within its ecosystem
The native token of the Walrus network is called WAL and it is the core unit of value that makes the whole system work Users pay WAL tokens to store their data for a fixed period and this payment is shared over time with those who run storage nodes and people who stake their tokens to support the network so that the system stays secure and dependable WAL also lets holders take part in decision making for the protocol because people with WAL tokens can vote on key changes such as pricing models or how rewards and penalties should work so that the community has a say in how Walrus grows and adapts to future needs
When Walrus launched its mainnet early in 2025 it was designed with a total maximum supply of five billion WAL tokens and a large part of these tokens are meant for the community including users developers and early participants while smaller portions go to investors and core contributors who helped build the project which gives a balance between supporting long term development and rewarding those who help the network succeed
The system uses a delegated proof of stake model where anyone who holds WAL can stake or delegate their tokens to trusted node operators and earn rewards based on how well those nodes perform while also helping secure the network and this encourages honest behavior and keeps the whole storage fabric working reliably even if some nodes fail or behave badly over time
Walrus is not just about storing files it also opens new possibilities for developers building web3 apps because stored data can be linked to smart contracts making it possible to create dynamic content programmable storage rules and decentralized applications that serve rich media without central servers which many people see as an important foundation for future decentralized internet services and projects that need secure and scalable data storage
