Applied Materials to pay $252 million to resolve illegal chip exports, US says

The U.S. Department of Commerce has fined Applied Materials $252 million to settle allegations of illegal exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China. This penalty is the second highest ever imposed by the Bureau of Industry and Security. The company was accused of 56 violations of export regulations, specifically for re-exporting or attempting to export approximately $126 million worth of equipment to SMIC.
