Amazon (AMZN.US) is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence into the healthcare industry.

According to CNBC, the company’s cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), recently launched an AI toolkit for healthcare providers called Amazon Connect Health, aimed at automating administrative tasks to help doctors and medical institutions reduce their heavy management burdens.

The company states that Amazon Connect Health can automatically generate medical records during real-time conversations between doctors and patients, as well as automatically add billing codes, symptoms, and treatment procedure codes. Additionally, the tool can extract key information from existing electronic health records and generate summaries, reducing the time doctors spend on paperwork. The system also offers patient identity verification and supports appointment scheduling and management services.

AWS Chief Medical Officer Rowland Illing said that the healthcare industry is currently overwhelmed by complex administrative processes. “We are very aware that the healthcare system is being flooded by administrative complexity,” he said. Artificial intelligence can play a key role in reducing medical paperwork, allowing doctors to focus more on patient care.

In recent years, tech giants have been introducing AI technology into healthcare management in hopes of improving system efficiency. Microsoft (MSFT.US), Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL.US, GOOG.US), and Oracle (ORCL.US) have all increased investments in medical AI tools, while many startups are actively developing automation solutions to streamline cumbersome processes in healthcare.

As the world’s largest cloud service provider, AWS leads in providing computing capacity, data storage, and related services. However, Amazon’s progress in developing office productivity applications has been less smooth. Despite launching several AI office software products in recent years, Amazon has gradually shut down some office tools like video conferencing and file sharing.

In contrast, Amazon has achieved more notable success with its customer service software product, Amazon Connect. This call center software has been widely adopted by enterprise customer service systems. Amazon previously stated in October last year that the product is expected to generate annual revenue of up to $1 billion. The new Amazon Connect Health features are also integrated with this call center platform.

Amazon Connect Health officially launched this Thursday. According to Amazon’s pricing plan, the cost for the automatic medical record generation feature is $99 per month, while patient identity verification is billed per conversation at about $0.15. Other features still in preview have not yet had specific prices announced.

Industry experts believe that as healthcare digitalization accelerates, the application space for AI in healthcare administration is rapidly expanding. This move by Amazon not only helps expand AWS’s influence in the healthcare sector but also reflects how tech companies are attempting to reshape the operation of healthcare services through AI technology.
