On the early morning of March 4th, Qwen’s leader Lin Junyang suddenly posted a tweet announcing that he would be leaving the Qwen team.

His post on X read: “me stepping down. bye my beloved qwen.”

Born in 1993, Lin Junyang is the youngest P10-level technical leader at Alibaba. He studied computer science at Peking University for his undergraduate degree and specialized in linguistics and applied linguistics at Peking University School of Foreign Languages for his master’s. With a background in both technology and linguistics, he began his career in 2019 after graduating, joining Alibaba DAMO Academy as a senior algorithm engineer.

At the end of 2022, Alibaba integrated DAMO Academy’s AI teams for language, vision, and other areas into Alibaba Cloud, establishing the Tongyi Laboratory. Lin Junyang was officially appointed as the technical lead for the Tongyi Qianwen series large models, overseeing the development and deployment of the Qianwen large model. In January of this year, at the AGI-Next Frontier Summit, he proposed the concept of “models as products,” emphasizing that researchers should, like product managers, transform research成果 into real, usable systems.
