【AI+ Upgrade】OpenAI Releases the Most Powerful Work Model GPT-5.4, Usable within Excel and Google Sheets with ChatGPT

OpenAI officially releases the new flagship base model GPT-5.4, which is now available in ChatGPT, API, and development tools Codex. For the first time, it integrates coding, computer operations, and reasoning functions into a single system. The company also launches a set of financial service tools, allowing users to directly use ChatGPT within Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets to build and analyze financial models.

OpenAI states that GPT-5.4 is the “most powerful and most efficient professional frontier model to date,” focusing on enterprise office and complex knowledge work scenarios. Compared to previous versions, the biggest change in GPT-5.4 is the enhancement of AI Agent capabilities. In the API and Codex, GPT-5.4 achieves native-level computer operation functions for the first time, supporting AI to execute complex workflows across software.

First-time introduction of native computer control capabilities

GPT-5.4 can not only generate text or code but also directly operate computer software, browse web pages, control mouse and keyboard to complete tasks, and integrate with enterprise applications such as spreadsheets and financial analysis tools, embedding into Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.

In the ChatGPT interface, GPT-5.4 supports “showing thought process in advance,” allowing users to adjust task directions during the model’s response process. It also improves deep web search and context retention in long logical scenarios. Its desktop navigation performance surpasses human benchmarks, setting record high scores in web search tests, and achieving or exceeding standards in professional knowledge assessments.

Analysis suggests that a series of upgrades in GPT-5.4 mark the transition of AI models from “dialogue tools” to automated task execution digital agents, further penetrating enterprise productivity software and professional knowledge work.

Introduction of tool search mechanism significantly reduces token consumption

OpenAI also launches two versions: GPT-5.4 Thinking, which is better at complex reasoning, and the high-performance GPT-5.4 Pro, aimed at paid users and high-end enterprise clients. The Pro version has a maximum context window of up to 1 million tokens, priced higher than version 5.2, but the introduction of the tool search mechanism greatly reduces token consumption.

For ChatGPT, GPT-5.4 Thinking is available from Thursday to Plus ($20/month), Team, and Pro users, replacing the previous GPT-5.2 Thinking. GPT-5.2 Thinking will be officially retired on June 5, 2026, three months later.

Limited access for free users to GPT-5.4

GPT-5.4 Pro is only available to Pro ($200/month) and Enterprise plan users. Free users can also have limited access to GPT-5.4 during system routing. Enterprise and educational plan users can enable early access through administrator settings.

Alongside GPT-5.4, OpenAI also releases the “OpenAI Financial Services” suite aimed at enterprises and financial institutions, helping professionals streamline financial analysis, investment memos, and other workflows. The core products are ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets (beta), which embed directly into spreadsheet cells to support building, analyzing, and updating complex financial models.
