Buterin proposes a deep transformation of Ethereum: cyberpunk quality from the next-generation network
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has presented an ambitious development plan aimed at returning to cyberpunk ideals while simultaneously improving the technical foundations. Buterin outlined a bold vision for how Ethereum can evolve, maintaining its ecosystem and integrating principles of privacy, censorship resistance, and decentralized governance that were core to the cyberpunk movement of the 1980s and 1990s.
In his statement, Buterin emphasized that Bitcoin marked an important milestone in digital assets, beginning widespread adoption in the 2000s. However, Ethereum expanded on this foundation by enabling programmable smart contracts and supporting a whole ecosystem of decentralized applications. Now, he proposes something even more pragmatic and fundamental.
Buterin: Ethereum needs to return to its ideological roots
In recent discussions, Buterin described his vision of creating “Ethereum that aligns with cyberpunk principles but without sacrificing functionality” as an additional layer closely integrated with the current network. This approach does not mean a complete overhaul — instead, it involves gradual evolution with the following priorities:
Buterin compared this process to Ethereum’s successful transition to proof-of-stake during The Merge — one of the biggest upgrades in blockchain history. “Ethereum has already transformed once during operation,” he noted, “and we can repeat this experience several more times.”
Evolution strategy: how Buterin envisions the new architecture
Buterin outlined specific directions that could form the basis of the next development stage. His vision includes four key technical transformations aimed at a more principled design:
Redesign of state structure — simplifying how the network stores, verifies, and interacts with information. This will allow performance optimization without compromising security.
Consensus optimization — a lighter and more efficient mechanism for nodes to reach agreement, promoting greater decentralization.
Built-in ZK-EVM verification — extending zero-knowledge proof capabilities directly into the protocol, improving both scalability and privacy.
Virtual machine upgrade — transitioning smart contracts to a new architecture better suited to modern developer and user needs.
Buterin suggested that within five years, or possibly sooner with advances in AI-assisted coding and formal verification, Ethereum could smoothly migrate existing smart contracts to this fundamentally new structure if necessary.
Balancing ideals and practical needs
Buterin’s proposal reflects a central dilemma in Ethereum’s evolution: how to harmonize decentralization and ideological purity with practical scalability and ease of use. Unlike Bitcoin, which remains closely aligned with a minimalist vision of digital money, Ethereum has grown into a vast ecosystem fueling decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and numerous tokenized assets.
