On February 5th, the New START Treaty between Russia and the U.S. expired and became invalid. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Peskov stated on the 6th that Russia and the U.S. will take a responsible stance on the New START Treaty issue, and both sides believe it is necessary to start negotiations on this matter as soon as possible. Peskov said that during talks in Abu Dhabi, Russia and the U.S. discussed the future of the New START Treaty and reached a consensus. U.S. Secretary of State Blinken said on the 6th that after the New START Treaty expired on the 5th, a “completely new treaty” is needed, and the U.S. will maintain a “strong, credible, and modernized nuclear deterrent.” Blinken also accused Russia of “violating treaty terms for many years and ceasing to fulfill the treaty in 2023,” and claimed that “treaty provisions that harm American interests will not be accepted.” (CCTV News)
