On March 3, 2026, 17-year-old high school senior Hu Jiahao from Linhai, Zhejiang, gained fame! His discovery of a new species, the Kuocang Mountain Ridge Snake (commonly known as the Chopstick Snake), was published in the international SCI journal Zoosystematics and Evolution. This is the first reptile species with a type locality in Zhejiang since the 20th century. Behind this achievement is the teenager’s nearly half-year dedication and perseverance.

The story begins in October 2024, when researchers found a fragmented snake carcass on Kuocang Mountain in Zhejiang. Suspected to be a new species, research stalled due to insufficient specimens. Hu Jiahao, a passionate enthusiast of amphibians and reptiles since childhood, volunteered to help. During the summer of 2025, he embarked on a quest to find the snake, traveling nearly 100 kilometers into the mountains after finishing his homework each day, and searching through the forest for over 40 consecutive nights.

On the evening of August 17, he finally spotted a live Chopstick Snake on his way down the mountain. This slender snake, about 30 centimeters long and entirely brownish, became the definitive specimen for identifying the new species. Over the following two months, he collected four more specimens, providing crucial evidence for the research. Genetic testing showed that the Chopstick Snake differs from its close relatives by 9.5%–10.9%, confirming it as an independent new species.

This seemingly fortunate discovery was never by chance. Hu Jiahao began studying taxonomy in junior high school, self-educating in professional knowledge and acquiring equipment. He even provided clues about albinistic bats to research teams. This time, he not only collected specimens but also took high-definition photos, organized data, and deeply participated in writing the scientific paper.

What is most inspiring about a high school student achieving such success is his pure passion and perseverance. Many believe that scientific research is distant from their lives, but Hu Jiahao proved through action that as long as one is dedicated and willing to invest time and effort, ordinary people can step into the world of science. The mysteries of nature are hidden in the mountains and forests, and also beneath the feet of every persistent explorer. His youthful spirit deserves everyone’s admiration!
