Zelenskyy: Ukraine Plans to Help Middle East Defend Against Iranian Drones
Ukrainian President Zelensky stated that Ukraine hopes to exchange funding and technical support for assistance in defending Middle Eastern countries against Iranian suicide drones.
In a publicly approved speech on Sunday, Zelensky said that three teams sent to the Middle East, each consisting of dozens of people, will conduct professional assessments and demonstrate how drone defense systems should operate.
Gulf countries have used a large number of air defense missiles to counter Iran’s attack drones and are seeking Ukraine’s expertise in shooting down these drones.
Zelensky said that nearly ten countries worldwide have sought assistance from Ukraine on how to respond to such attacks. Earlier this week, he mentioned that teams had been sent to Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, and another official said experts had also visited a U.S. military base in Jordan.
He added, “This is not about participating in military actions; we are not at war with Iran. It’s about protection and a comprehensive, thorough assessment of how to respond to (Iranian) Shahed drones.”
Regarding what Ukraine will gain from this aid, it remains to be discussed. He frankly said, “For us, both technology and funding are very important at the moment.”
Zelensky also stated that he is unsure whether Ukraine will sign a drone cooperation agreement with the United States, although Kyiv has been working for months to reach such an agreement.
