Former Alibaba Tongyi Qianwen post-training lead Yu Bowen joins ByteDance

Gate News reports that on March 12, Yu Bowen, the former post-training lead of Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen large model, officially joined ByteDance as the post-training lead for the large model R&D team, Seed Visual Models and Multimodal Interaction Team. This is the first public announcement of Yu Bowen’s career move since leaving Alibaba in early March this year. ByteDance has not responded.

Yu Bowen earned his Ph.D. from the Institute of Information Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 2022, then joined Alibaba DAMO Academy and was selected for the “Alibaba Star” program that year. He later led the post-training research of the Qwen-Instruct series models. In early March, he resigned alongside core members including Lin Junyang, the technical lead of Qianwen, and the post-training work was taken over by Zhou Hao, who joined Tongyi Laboratory from Google DeepMind earlier this year. Previously, Zhou Chang, the former technical lead of Tongyi Qianwen, had joined Seed with his team in 2024.
