Vietnam – US opens negotiations for bilateral trade agreement
During the business trip to the United States, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc had effective meetings with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
The biggest breakthrough during the tense negotiation days was that the U.S. agreed with Vietnam to initiate negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement, including tariff content - the most important pillar of the agreement.
The "steel door" that seemed firmly shut has officially been opened, after Vietnam proposed this idea several times but the U.S. had not agreed.
The US side has agreed:
- Appoint Minister of Finance Bessent as head of the negotiating delegation with Vietnam
