Recently, the $45 million military parade held by Trump has sparked various controversies and reflections in American society, exposing four core contradictions present in current American society.
First of all, the boundary between personal honor and national ceremony has become severely blurred. Trump combined the 250th anniversary celebration of the United States Army with his own 79th birthday, investing a huge amount of money to create a grand scene, while ignoring the basic treatment of the participating soldiers. The 6,600 soldiers on site were arranged to sleep with sleeping bags in the Department of Agriculture's office space overnight, receiving only one hot meal a day. It is worth noting that the steel plates laid to prevent heavy tanks from damaging the roads cost $3 million, while at the same time, the veterans' medical care budget was cut by 23%. This stark contrast led to 43 Republican lawmakers choosing to be absent from the event, expressing their dissatisfaction with this practice.
Furthermore, the excessive display of government power has exacerbated social livelihood issues. On the eve of the military parade, Trump deployed 2,700 soldiers to suppress the immigrant rights protests in Los Angeles, resulting in 600 rounds of ammunition being fired and 70 arrests, which in turn triggered solidarity actions in 22 states across the country. Meanwhile, due to a shortage of immigrant labor, the prices of agricultural products in California have increased by about 30%, while the costs of the parade could have been used to support the education expenses of 3,000 impoverished children for an entire year.
Third, the tension between central power and local autonomy has become increasingly prominent. Trump invoked the Insurrection Act to mobilize troops across state lines, breaking the political tradition of the separation of powers in the United States since 1965. This action prompted 22 states, including California, to form a "state rights coalition" to resist, and also led to a resurgence in calls for "California independence." Notably, during this conflict, large Bitcoin transfers grew by 37%, and stablecoin trading volume surged by 58%, indicating public concern over political stability.
Ultimately, this incident has dealt a dual blow to the United States' international image and domestic cohesion. The military display during the parade was interpreted by international media as a "symbol of authoritarianism," while the U.S. military readiness rating has fallen to its lowest point in a decade due to improper resource allocation. Polls show that 62% of Americans believe this parade was merely a "personal performance," and Trump's approval rating has also dropped to a new low of 39%.
This costly military parade has, in fact, become a microcosm of the challenges facing the American democratic system and the crisis of national identity, reflecting the deep-seated divisions in contemporary American society.
