The key upgrade to accelerate Ethereum transactions: How EIP-4844 redefines network efficiency

The scalability problem that led to the emergence of EIP-4844

Ethereum was facing an increasing challenge: as more users utilize the network, transactions become slower and more costly. This scalability bottleneck particularly affects periods of high demand. The search for solutions led to the development of EIP-4844 (Ethereum Improvement Proposal 4844), an innovation that represents a significant change in the speed at which the network processes data.

What is EIP-4844 and its role in the Cancun upgrade

EIP-4844, also known as proto-danksharding, integrates with the Cancun upgrade of Ethereum as a revolutionary tool. Its purpose is to increase the capacity for transactions per second while simultaneously reducing network fees. The proposal introduces a new mechanism: transactions that carry special data structures called “blobs”.

Understanding the blobs: the central innovation

Blobs act as containers for temporary information attached to transactions. Unlike traditional Ethereum data, they possess unique characteristics: they exist only temporarily and do not interact directly with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This separation allows for the transport of significant volumes of data without compromising the overall performance of the network or proportionately increasing operational costs.

The speed abbreviation that EIP-4844 offers is directly related to this data storage efficiency.

Operational Mechanism: How EIP-4844 Transforms the Network

EIP-4844 works by attaching these blob structures to the Ethereum blocks, expanding the amount of information that each block can process. This increase in capacity has two immediate impacts:

Enhanced Speed: Transactions execute with reduced confirmation times, transforming network performance comparably to an infrastructure upgrade.

Cost Reduction: As blobs represent a cost-effective method of data transmission, fees decrease significantly, making Ethereum accessible to a broader audience.

The Future Path: Proto-danksharding as a Bridge to Full Danksharding

EIP-4844 is not the final solution; it serves as an intermediate step towards full danksharding. This subsequent stage represents an even more sophisticated advancement, allowing Ethereum to manage massive volumes of transactions while maintaining integrity and security. Thus, the current implementation simultaneously prepares the network for even greater capabilities on the technological horizon.
