so i met a follower randomly today in Enugu.
when he recognised me he immediately said he was grateful to God he met me.
he said he had wanted to ask me about something he has been battling with for a while now but i wasn't reachable.
i asked him what about it?
he said since he left his last job in this space he has been struggling to get a new job. he even said he hasn't gotten a response from his applications so far.
i felt bad for him and immediately asked him to show me the copy of his resume he has been using and when i saw it, i understood the problem immediately.
the guy had solid experience but his resume was 7 pages long.
i told him this;
your resume is not your life story. it is actually a marketing document designed to get you an interview.
he smiled and said he didn't really understand, so i broke it down properly.
i said, recruiters don't read resumes word for word. they scan. you usually have like 10 seconds to sell yourself, if they can't see value fast they move on.
i also told him that a resume should be short, clear and focused on impact. what you did, how you did it and the result. not every role you have ever had.
finally i added, your resume should be an advert for you, not a biography.
immediately i was done talking to him, i just told him to re-write his resume and send it to me on whatsApp for confirmation, then i drove off.
the reason i am telling this story is so that everyone going through the same shit can learn from what i said to him.
i hope you learnt something from this?
vale nunc.
