Ethereum Takes Major Step Forward with Blob Capacity Expansion in Fusaka Upgrade

Abstract generation in progress

Ethereum has reached a critical milestone by successfully implementing the final Blob Parameters Only (BPO) fork as part of the broader Fusaka upgrade cycle. The network’s target blob allocation per block has been raised from 10 to 14, while the maximum capacity ceiling has jumped from 15 to 21—a significant expansion aimed at bolstering the platform’s data throughput.

This phased approach to parameter tuning marks a departure from traditional upgrade cycles. Rather than bundling all changes into major annual releases, the BPO framework enables Ethereum to fine-tune essential network parameters like blobs independently, allowing for more granular testing and safer rollout of capacity increases.

Blobs: Building Blocks for Cheaper Layer 2 Transactions

For those unfamiliar, blobs were first introduced during the 2024 Dencun upgrade to offer an economical data storage solution for Layer 2 Rollup protocols. These temporary data packages remain on the Ethereum network for approximately 18 days before being automatically pruned, creating a cost-effective alternative to traditional calldata storage.

Why This Matters for Layer 2 Networks

As the single-block blob quota expands progressively, Ethereum’s Layer 2 solutions gain access to substantially more data bandwidth. This additional capacity directly translates to lower transaction fees for users interacting with Rollups, helping these scaling solutions maintain competitive cost structures even as network demand continues to rise. The more data space available, the more transactions can be batched efficiently, reducing per-transaction overhead.

The Fusaka upgrade cycle thus represents Ethereum’s strategic commitment to supporting scalability solutions while maintaining network stability through careful, measured capacity adjustments.
