The European Union regulatory authorities recently issued an important directive to the X platform—requiring the platform to retain all technical documentation and operational data related to its AI chatbot Grok until the end of 2026. The core issue behind this decision is the misuse of Grok.

False Multimedia Content Becomes a Current Hidden Threat

According to PANews, the Grok feature on the X platform has recently been exploited by some users to edit and generate false content materials. These processed images and videos have subsequently been widely circulated on the platform. The victims include both adult and minor users, raising concerns. EU Commission spokesperson Thomas Renière emphasized in a public statement that the EU “takes such illegal activities seriously.”

Regulatory Authorities’ Dual Actions

This is not the first time the EU has required data retention from the X platform; it is actually an extension of the existing directive from 2025. The new requirements not only involve Grok’s operational records but also mandate the platform to securely store user interaction data, including transparency requirements for cookie deletion policies—aiming to ensure that user privacy protections are not compromised by AI applications.

Grok Developer Responds to Regulatory Pressure

Grok was developed by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, and has been integrated into the X platform. In response to the EU’s regulatory measures, X quickly announced that it would take proactive measures against all illegal content—including deleting violating materials, banning offending accounts, and actively establishing cooperation mechanisms with government agencies.
