HODL or Swing Trading? Position Management Is the Key

Many people simply categorize strategies into HODL and swing trading, but the truly mature approach is to combine both. In a bull market, holding yields big profits; in a volatile market, swing trading helps reduce costs.
Currently, the market is more akin to structural oscillation rather than a unidirectional trend. At this stage, going all-in and holding tightly or trading frequently in the short term can lead to mistakes. The better solution is “core position + tactical position”: hold the core position long-term, and use floating positions for range trading.
Why? Because no one can sell at the absolute high or buy at the absolute low, but a phased strategy can reduce uncertainty. For example, reducing some positions at key resistance levels, then re-entering after a pullback at support levels—this way, you participate in the trend while controlling drawdowns.
Additionally, emotional management is crucial. Greed tends to dominate during upward moves, while panic sets in during declines. Many people give back profits because their positions exceed their psychological tolerance.
Another often overlooked aspect is capital efficiency. In the early stage of a bull market, focus on position size; in the mid-stage, focus on rhythm; in the late stage, focus on risk control. Currently, we are more like transitioning from the early to the mid-stage.
So, instead of obsessing over which strategy to choose, ask yourself: can I sleep well with a 20% drawdown? If not, it’s time to reduce your position.
