The African solar industry has entered a sustainable growth phase, with solar power installations becoming the focal point of the continent’s clean energy development. According to a recent report from the Global Solar Council (GSC), the region is experiencing a boom in utility-scale projects, driving strong industry growth.

New Capacity Surges 54% Compared to Last Year

Data shows that Africa added approximately 4.5 gigawatts of new solar capacity, representing a significant 54% increase over the previous period and surpassing the record set in 2023. This figure reflects the rapidly accelerating deployment of solar power across the region.

According to Jin10, the report emphasizes that new installations are expected to continue increasing in the coming years. GSC forecasts that Africa’s annual solar capacity could exceed six times the current level by 2029, indicating a top-tier development outlook for the region.

South Africa, Nigeria, and Egypt Lead Installation Trends

These three countries are the main drivers in the solar installation race on the continent. South Africa leads with an installed capacity of 1.6 gigawatts, establishing itself as the regional renewable energy hub. Nigeria follows with 803 megawatts of new capacity, while Egypt reaches 500 megawatts.

This capacity distribution shows that these nations have identified solar energy as a strategic solution to meet the growing electricity demand.

Outlook of 33 Gigawatts by 2029

As both the distribution market and utility-scale projects expand simultaneously across more countries, GSC projects Africa’s annual solar capacity could surpass 33 gigawatts by 2029. This target is supported by strong momentum from large-scale solar installation projects.

This trend not only creates economic opportunities but also contributes to the continent’s energy transition goals, reaffirming the increasingly vital role of solar energy in Africa’s power system.
