Yaman Southern Transition Council announced the transition period and referendum plan
The President of the Southern Yemen Transition Council, Aidarus Zubaydi, announced in January that they will officially begin a two-year transitional period. This decision aims to further develop regional dialogue and shift from political competition to institutional negotiations.
Transition Period: a New Political Chapter
According to the current plan, the Yemen Southern Transition Council will initiate a reconciliation process for the future of the two regions by establishing stable communication with the northern side. Once the transition period concludes, a national referendum will be held to determine the new political status of the southern region and its right to self-determination. This referendum is scheduled to be conducted under the supervision and initiative of the United Nations.
Cooperation Between North and South
The Southern Transition Council has called on the international community to actively support dialogue between northern and southern forces. These negotiations will be based on mutual interests, regional stability, and development goals. The Council also emphasized its readiness to support communication channels with the northern “national forces” and to discuss relevant agreements regarding the transition period.
Restoring State Institutions and Combating Threats
The Yemen Southern Transition Council expressed its intention to work with northern forces to restore state institutions and continue the fight against the Houthi movement. This aspect is a crucial part of the transition strategy. The Council acknowledged the importance of international community involvement and mediation in guiding the transition process, which will lead to stability and political resilience in Yemen.
