⚠️ LATEST: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar is pushing to withdraw from contracts with the U.S. - Financial Times.
The Iran war is putting economic pressure on Gulf countries, making heavy investment in the U.S. less attractive.
To understand why this matters, we need to look at the “petrodollar system”
For decades, the petrodollar system worked like this:
✅ Gulf countries sell oil in U.S. dollars
✅ They reinvest much of that money into U.S. assets and bonds
✅ In return, the U.S. provides military protection
This system helped keep global demand for the U.S. dollar strong because countries needed dollars to buy oil.
But now it’s being questioned.
If Gulf nations feel U.S. protection is no longer guaranteed, the significance to keep investing in the U.S. weakens.
That could mean less foreign capital flowing into U.S. markets and less demand for dollars in global oil trade and this could potentially signaling the slow decline of the petrodollar era.
