Concerns Over Surveillance and Autonomous Weapons Prompt Departure of OpenAI Robotics Head
OpenAI's head of robotics, Caitlin Kalinowski, has resigned citing ethical concerns over the company's recent agreement with the Pentagon. Kalinowski, who joined OpenAI in late 2024 from Meta (where she led AR hardware efforts), announced her departure on March 7, 2026, via social media.
In her statement, she emphasized that while AI plays a vital role in national security, "surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation." The resignation follows OpenAI's deal to deploy its models on a classified U.S. Department of Defense network, after similar talks with Anthropic collapsed over stricter safeguards against mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.
OpenAI confirmed the departure and reiterated its "red lines": no domestic surveillance and no autonomous weapons, while pursuing responsible national security applications. The move has sparked debate within the AI community about balancing innovation, ethics, and military use of advanced technologies, especially as robotics and AI integration advance.#CryptoMarketsDipSlightly
