nobody in tech is talking about the biggest threat to AI investment rn.
this threat is water.
specifically, desalination plants in the Persian Gulf. and Iran's ability to destroy them.
the Gulf states run on desalinated water.
Kuwait: 90% of drinking water comes from desalination.
Oman: 86%.
Saudi Arabia: 70%.
hundreds of plants sit along the Gulf coast. without them, major cities literally cannot sustain their populations.
a leaked 2008 US diplomatic cable warned that Riyadh "would have to evacuate within a week" if the Jubail desalination plant was seriously damaged.
they're existential infrastructure.
Bahrain accused Iran of striking one of its desalination plants.
Iranian strikes already landed 12 miles from Dubai's Jebel Ali, one of the world's largest desalination plants.
Iran itself says the US struck a desalination plant on Qeshm Island first.
Iran can't match US/Israeli firepower. but it can threaten the water supply of every Gulf state.
now here's the part nobody's connecting.
Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar have collectively invested $165 billion in global deals in 2025 alone. all went into US tech and AI.
Saudi's PIF launched Humain, a national AI company. UAE has Stargate, one of the largest data center projects in the world. Qatar just created Qai, a national AI company. these countries are bankrolling OpenAI, Microsoft, Google's AI infrastructure.
For the Gulf States, Investment in AI Is Partly About U.S. Protection.
if Gulf states become critical partners in America's AI race against China, the US has to guarantee their security. AI investment as an insurance policy.
right now, Iranian missiles are landing near the plants that keep these countries alive. if a major desalination facility goes offline, millions without drinking water.
and a country in crisis doesn't write $20B checks for AI data centers.
Iran hits desalination → water crisis in Gulf → economic instability → Gulf sovereign funds pull back or freeze investments → US AI companies lose their biggest external funding source → the entire AI buildout slows down.
geopolitics is the ultimate upstream dependency.
pay attention.
