Indonesia Pauses Tailks on Trump’s Board of Peace Over Mideast Escalation
(MENAFN) Indonesia has decided to halt all involvement in the Board of Peace initiative launched by US President Donald Trump, citing escalating military conflict in the Middle East, according to reports.
Foreign Minister Sugiono explained that “the decision was taken in response to the latest developments in the region,” noting that the escalation has shifted the foreign policy priorities of countries participating in the initiative.
He added that international focus has moved toward “the consequences of the conflict involving Iran.” Sugiono also stated that Indonesia would conduct intensive consultations with Gulf partners, who are directly impacted by the ongoing attacks and rising regional tensions.
The move comes amid domestic criticism, with political and religious groups questioning Indonesia’s involvement in the council. Critics warned that joining a body led by the Trump administration could weaken Indonesia’s long-standing support for the Palestinian cause.
The Indonesian Ulema Council called for an immediate exit from the initiative, arguing that “the body lacks effectiveness while military operations in the region continue.”
Reports indicate that the suspension of participation occurs as regional tensions remain elevated and diplomatic discussions regarding the initiative face growing scrutiny.
