Bramer: U.S. pressure could cause NATO to disintegrate

The tension between U.S. President Trump, whose ambitions to acquire Greenland are growing, and eight European countries opposing him is escalating, with concerns about a potential trade clash intensifying. Ian Bremmer, head of the U.S.-based Eurasia Group, a global political risk research firm, said in an interview at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, that if Trump continues to pressure, NATO could come to an end. He also predicted that European countries, in an effort to contain the U.S., will shift their strategic cooperation toward China. The interview is as follows.

Reporter: What is your view on Trump’s demand for Greenland, and could it lead to the collapse of NATO?

Ian Bremmer: If Trump continues to demand territory and refuses to back down, it could mean the end of NATO. However, this move is also very unpopular within the United States. The public does not support it, and there are no legitimate reasons given. It’s driven by Trump’s vanity and selfishness. When national interests and the president’s personal interests diverge too clearly, it becomes a serious problem.
