1Password launches an integrated access platform for artificial intelligence and automation systems
1Password today announced two related initiatives aimed at enhancing how companies manage and strengthen access in modern digital environments that include AI agents and automation systems. The first release is a new platform called “Unified Access,” which discovers and consolidates access risks, protects credentials, and audits activities through human users, AI agents, and machine identities. The second release is a “User API” for partners, enabling users to automate security tools and identity management for security operations directly within 1Password.
“Unified Access” aims to address security challenges faced by enterprises when deploying accessible systems and software agents that autonomously perform tasks. As AI agents and automated workflows now operate continuously and interact with various services and data sources without manual intervention.
1Password CEO David Fosnaugh explained, “This transformation requires new access controls focused on real-time authorization rather than one-time authentication.” He added that AI agents can invoke APIs, connect tools, and automate workflows, so security systems must dynamically verify and control access at each action.
The newly available Unified Access Professional helps security teams identify AI-related authentication risks, store keys in repositories, and manage credentials for humans and machines within a unified secure environment. Simultaneously, the “Partner User API” allows security vendors and automation platforms to directly integrate with 1Password’s enterprise password manager, enabling access decisions during security incidents.
The User API allows workflows to automatically pause or resume user access when suspicious activity or security risks are detected. Security teams can incorporate these operations into security operations center workflows, making them part of automated incident response processes.
This new approach emphasizes continuous identity security by transforming credentials and keys from static components into actively managed elements. It enables security orchestration platforms to trigger access changes directly within 1Password, advancing from identity visibility to real-time identity governance.
