In einem Gap-Geschäft in San Francisco haben Besucher bereits begonnen, das World ID zu erhalten. Dabei wird das ikonische, volleyballgroße „Orb“-Gerät installiert, um Gesichts- und Augenerkennungsbilder zu erfassen. Gleichzeitig wird eine geplante Visa-Zahlungskarte es World ID-Inhabern ermöglichen, digitale Vermögenswerte zu konsumieren, einschließlich Worldcoin – einer Kryptowährung, die in den meisten Märkten bei der Registrierung als Belohnung ausgegeben wird. Zudem testet die Dating-App Tinder in Japan das Identitätssystem, um sicherzustellen, dass Nutzer echte Personen sind und ihr Alter mit den Angaben übereinstimmt.
Das Unternehmen erklärt, dass das Orb-Gerät die Gesicht- und Irisbilder in eine anonyme digitale Zeichenkette umwandelt, die auf dem eigenen Gerät des Nutzers gespeichert wird. Tools for Humanity selbst speichert diese Daten nicht. Trevor Traina, Chief Business Officer von TFH, sagte, das Unternehmen wolle Einnahmen durch Gebühren für die Nutzung der Anwendung erzielen – jedes Mal, wenn eine App die World ID eines Nutzers zur Bestätigung seiner Echtheit verwendet, fällt eine Gebühr an.
