Trump plans to abolish the "cashless bail" system in Washington D.C.
Jin10 data reported on August 25 that, according to AXIOS, President Trump plans to sign an executive order on Monday local time aimed at eliminating the cashless bail system for arrested suspects in Washington D.C. This is the latest move by Trump to push for federal control over law enforcement in the capital, with thousands of federal agents and National Guard soldiers currently deployed in the city. Under the cashless bail system, suspects can be released before trial without having to pay any money. White House officials stated that if D.C. does not terminate the cashless bail policy, the executive order could threaten to withhold federal funds or approval for government-supported projects. A White House aide said the order will require law enforcement to ‘work to ensure’ that detainees are held federally rather than locally. Trump administration officials believe federal judges are more likely to detain criminal suspects before trial than D.C. judges. Under current arrangements, individuals detained by federal law enforcement are held federally, while those arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department are held locally.
