Ian Hogarth, a tech entrepreneur and prominent investor in artificial intelligence, will lead its new taskforce to examine the security risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI), the British government said on Sunday.

Last week, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on the UK to act quickly to maintain its status as a tech hub and urged tech leaders to seize the opportunities and challenges presented by AI.

Sunak seeks the UK to play a “leading” role in the development of global artificial intelligence, and he wants the UK to become the “base camp” for global AI regulation. The UK will host a summit on the security risks of artificial intelligence later this year.

**Hogarth has been chosen to head the UK’s AI Foundation Model Taskforce, tasked with advancing cutting-edge security research ahead of the summit. **He will report directly to Sunak and UK Technology Secretary Chloe Smith.

In April this year, the British government pledged to invest 100 million pounds to establish an AI basic model working group. The working group will study the risks associated with artificial intelligence and conduct security research. It will also assist in the development of international security safeguards, such as shared security, as well as security standards and infrastructure.

well-known investor in AI field

Hogarth is an investor who has invested in more than 50 AI startups and a well-known angel investor in the AI field. He also launched a new venture capital fund, Plural, in 2021.

In 2018, he began researching and writing the annual State of Artificial Intelligence report with another investor, Nathan Benaich.

Hogarth was also the co-founder of Internet music company SongKick, which was sold to Warner Music in 2017.

“The prime minister has laid out a bold vision for the UK to strengthen the AI safety sector, which has so far been under-resourced despite accelerated development of AI capabilities,” Hogarth said in a statement. “I am honored to have the opportunity to chair such an important mission ahead of the UK’s inaugural Global AI Safety Summit.”

Ensure the safe development of AI

As Hogarth’s appointment was announced, Sunak said it was our duty to safely develop new AI technologies “for the sake of our future generations”.

“The more advances in artificial intelligence, the greater our chances of growing our economy and delivering better public services,” Sunak said in a statement. “But because AI has the potential to transform our future, we have a responsibility to ensure that AI is developed safely and responsibly for our children and grandchildren.”
